Establishment
A statutory body
The Ports Authority of the Turks and Caicos Islands was created under the Ports Authority Ordinance to manage the country's maritime affairs, and has been operational since 2008. Before that the ports were run first through the customs department and later as a separate government cost centre.
Bringing operations, planning and regulatory oversight together under one organisation was a deliberate step: the islands were growing, maritime traffic was growing with them, and the ports needed to be managed as national infrastructure rather than as an administrative function.
The Authority reports through the Ministry of Immigration and Border Services. Its functions are set out in Section 5 of the Ordinance, and it is intended to be financially self-sustaining, funded by the tariffs and dues levied on the traffic it handles.
